Out of Bounds: The Glen Mountain Ski Story $21.00 Author: Brian Eddington

Knowlton’s Glen Mountain was a great place to ski, raise a family or raise a glass.
Here’s the story behind all those activities. Who founded the Glen? When? Why was the bar such a success? Why was there a need for a second ‘Glen’ bar? Why have so many great skiers come from such a comparably small mountain?

Over the years, all sorts of colourful people have been involved in the Glen organization: Peg Barnes, Buzzy Paige, Ken Jasper, Jackrabbit Johannsen, Bob Richardson, Pat Côté, Dick Shea, Jack Price, Denis Morin, Brian Robinson, Lucille Wheeler Vaughan, John Parry, Eddy Persons, Hank Rotherham, Peter White. The Glen has also produced some wonderful skiers, including Peter Smart, Paul Cunnius, Leigh-Jay Quilliams and Trevor Gavura.

The book is a thorough, not-so-serious look at what Ski Canada magazine has called, "The zany black sheep of the Ski East centres." Brian Eddington brings all aspects of it to life.

Hommage/ bilingual $35.00 Author: Denis Palmer
A Homage to a rural life

Images and Text

The drawings, watercolour paintings, and stories within these pages pay homage to rural life in the Eastern Townships of Quebec.  They explore the character of the people, the work they do, the pace of their lives, the manner in which they seek to maintain harmony with their surroundings, and their responses to change and the passage of time. These stories express knowledge of family, ancestry, and community: long memories for patterns of weather and the seasons, the joyful and difficult times of the past, the flavour of their speech.

RAISE THE FLAG & SOUND THE CANNON $23.00 Author: Donald J. Davison

Years ago I came across some very old leather-bound diaries in my family's library. The period was 1842 - 1849. The diary started in England where a bankrupt solicitor named John Rumsey from High Wycombe, was banished to America. The diary covered the sea voyage to New York, the canal boats to Lake Ontario and the steamers and barges to Canada. During Rumsey's lengthy stay in Montreal he met an Irish servant who had fallen on hard times. Rumsey tried to help him. According to his diary:

This being a country in which great things sometimes come from little beginnings, I suggested to a poor Irish servant, the vending of a corn medicine. I gave him a recipe, a fine name for it and an elaborate account of its merits. I mixed up the first fourteen bottles, the Queen's Printer gave publicity to it and after sending the bottles among the Canadiens, my Irish friend is now practicing his profession in the wide spread and free soil of the Yankee.

The diary ended the day his lodgings and the Montreal parliament buildings burnt down in 1849. While I wrote the biography,

I felt that it was no way to end a book — and so began the birth of the novel, Raise the Flag & Sound the Cannon …

When I heard about the St. Albans Raid, during the Civil War, it made the perfect melodrama for Rumsey's adventures ... even if it was fifteen years later.

Rumsey’s Irish friend returns to Montreal a success, and convinces John to leave Montreal, change his name to "Doc" Rumsey and to sell patent medicines in

the “free soil of the Yankee.”

John Rumsey embarks on his new career to sell the Chickasaw Revival Tonic and to move to the first town across the border, St. Albans, Vermont. His timing is terrible.

“We have had to use Cousin Joe`s forcible expression a 'Raid From Hell`.  For about half an hour yesterday afternoon I thought that we should be burnt up and robbed. But I hope you don`t imagine I was one moment frightened, though the noise of guns, the agitated looks of the rushing men and our powerless condition were startlingly enough.” Excerpt from a letter by Anne Eliza Brainerd Smith, to her husband Gov. Smith.

Rumsey arrives just as the Confederate Rebels attack the banks in town. When a battle ensues, “Doc” Rumsey is forced at gunpoint to help their wounded.

They all escape to neutral Canada, where they thought they would be free of prosecution. The Canadian authorities fool them and arrest most of the Rebels. This story recreates the foiled escapes of the Rebels, especially those who got away and were never heard from again.

The Madonna of the St. Denis Bar-BQ/English version, Belle-Moue / French version $15.00 Author: Hugette O'Neil
The Madonna of St. Denis Bar-BQ is a true account of a parent-child relationship, beginning with the details of the death of the author's mother, Belle-Moue, and tracing her history back, chapter by chapter, to her birth some decades earlier. It reads like modern-day fiction, scored with factual information. The theme is universal. Authors from different cultural backgrounds have written about the life and death of a parent: Simone de Beauvoir and Michael Ignatieff, among others, have recounted the mother-to-daughter, mother-to-son legacy.

The setting for the book is régional: it is the life story of a Québécoise, in la belle province, from 1988 back to 1909. The plot includes a distinct dimension - veritable influence of religion and government on 20th century French Canada and on women in particular - a subject about which Huguette O'Neil writes with convincing authority.

The Murder Stone $25.00 Author: Louise Penny
THE MURDER STONE is set over the course of one summer week at the Manoir Bellechasse, a remote luxury inn on the shores of Lac Massawippi, in Quebec. It's to this inn that Armand Gamache has brought Reine Marie to celebrate a wedding anniversary. But while they're surrounded by nature, it soon becomes clear there's something deeply unnatural there with them. Perhaps it's the Finney family. Cultured, gracious, the more they smile the more vicious they become. Perhaps its one of the young workers at the remote Manoir, suffering cabin fever so far from civilization.

Dead Cold $25.00 Author: Louise Penny

It's winter in the idyllic Quebec village of Three Pines.  Snow is gently falling and the residents are preparing their Christmas celebrations.  But someone is preparing something far more sinister.  Murder. As Chief Inspector Gamache of the Sureté investigates he uncovers layers of secrets buried deep and long hidden, until now.

The Cruellest Month $25.00 Author: Louise Penny

It's spring in the tiny Quebec village and an Easter celebration is underway. It's a time of great relief in Canada, when winter loosens it's grip and new, fragile, hope emerges. Everything is coming back to life. Buds are on the trees, crocuses and snow drops and daffodils are struggling through the newly thawed earth. Life is insisting and insinuating itself.

But not everything is meant to return to life. Some things are better off dead and buried.
I was hanged for living alone, for having blue eyes and sunburned skin, tattered skirts, few buttons, a weedy farm in my own name, and a surefire cure for warts.

Gabri, Clara, Myrna and a group of other villagers decide to celebrate Easter with a seance. They'll raise the dead. And to do that they choose the most malevolent place they know. The Old Hadley House, the horror on the hill, the site of so much of their woe. The villagers decide it's time to rid it of its evil. But the Old Hadley House doesn't let go easily, and instead of raising the dead a new spirit is created. One of their party dies. Of fright.

But were they helped along? By something of this world, or the next?

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his team from the Surete du Quebec are called to investigate and uncover the real horrors of the Hadley House and the horrors that someone had hoped would never rise again.

In The Cruellest Month, Armand Gamache is forced to face his own ghosts and a betrayal from within the Surete and his own heart.

When they harvest my corpse
Surprise, surprise:
I am still alive.

Something nasty is stirring, and you're invited to attend.

Before I was not a witch.
Now I am one.

Still Life: There's an art to catching a killer $10.00 Author: Louise Penny

‘Three Pines is made up of good people,

but one of us is festering’

As the early morning mist clears on Thanksgiving Sunday,

The homes of Three Pines come to life – all except one…

To locals, the village is a safe haven. So they are bewildered

When a well-loved member of the community is found dead

in the maple woods. Surely it was an accident – a hunter’s

arrow gone astray. Who could want Jane Neal dead?

In a long and distinguished career with the Suréte de Quebec,

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache has learned to look for

snakes in Eden. Gamache knows something dark is lurking

behind the white picket fences, and if he watches closely

enough, Three Pines will begin to give up its secrets…

Julia Grace Wales, Canada's Hidden Heroine/soft cover $27.00 Author: Mary Jean Woodward Bean
Julia Grace Wales, Canada's Hidden Heroine/hard cover $43.00 Author: Mary Jean Woodward Bean

This is the story of a remarkable woman who grew up in the Eastern Townships of Quebec during the late 1800s. Distressed by the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, she wrote a plan for continuous mediation that could have brought the fighting to a halt early on, but the diplomats and heads of state failed to consider it seriously. Her conversations with European officials are surprising-and most revealing. All Canadians can take pride in Miss Wales' work for peace. It eventually led to the organization of the League of Nations and tlater, the United Nations, and the relatively peaceful years we have enjoyed since 1945.

The Eastern Townships: In Town and Village / Les Cantons-de-l'Est : villes et villages $37.00 Author: Matthew Farfan

The Eastern Townships are home to some of Quebec’s most historic villages and towns. This stunning bilingual book
chronicles the history of the Townships through rare early photographs. Some 200 images, each carefully researched, have been selected from the author's extensive personal collection, providing a fascinating glimpse of life in the region from about 1860 to 1950.

THE VERMONT-QUEBEC BORDER: LIFE ON THE LINE $27.00 Author: Matthew Farfan

"From Ottawa or Washington this international community is something that can not possibly exist officially. But it does still exist at the community and personal level. Our fire departments [.] stand ready at all times to assist one another. Our churches and service clubs see no border when someone is in need. We all have friends and relatives on both sides of the border and few of us ever think of the other as a Vermonter or a Quebecer.

This is as it should be, and how it can be if we can keep the bureaucrats out of our lives."

--Lloyd Bliss, Editor, The Stanstead Journal, 1977.

So begins the preface to chapter 1 of a new book by Matthew Farfan. The title of the book is The Vermont-Quebec Border: Life on the Line, Arcadia Publishing's latest release in its popular "Images of America" series.

Introduced in 1993, this series spotlights the history of local communities all across the United States. Each book in the series contains over 200 rare early photographs, many of them never before published. These images, and the texts that accompany them, bring to life the places and events described in each volume.

The Vermont-Quebec Border: Life on the Line is a visual record of life in the villages, towns, and countryside in a unique part of the world - the region that spans the imaginary line separating Quebec from Vermont. Never before has a book in this series been devoted specifically to the international border.

The Vermont-Quebec Border: Life on the Line is timely. In recent years, issues relating to the border have been thrust to the forefront as never before. This is due not only to growing security concerns but also to an increasing scrutiny in the media of border issues and of how heightened security is impacting life in communities all along the border. The border has played an important role in the history and the everyday lives of people living along its length - in communities in both Vermont and Quebec, and it will undoubtedly continue to shape these communities in the years to come.

The Vermont-Quebec Border: Life on the Line includes rare images from both northern Vermont and the Eastern Townships of Quebec. Many of the photographs in this book are taken directly on the border, with a view of both sides of the line. The author offers insights on a range of issues, including customs and immigration, security, smuggling, dual citizenship, cross-border trade, international friendship and cooperation, and much more.

The book also features excerpts from interviews with longtime border residents and other figures connected with this part of the world.

While the focus of the book is on the past, clearly there is a message here:

modern security concerns should not be allowed to destroy the unique international community that has evolved along this 145-km (90-mile) stretch of the Canada-U.S. border. Or, as the Derby Line-Stanstead Joint Municipal Committee on Border Issues stated in 2007 (as quoted in the introduction to the book): "We are proud of the spirit that exists here on the border, and we do not accept to be penalized for a simple accident of geography which, for us, is all that the border really is."

Matthew Farfan is a writer, editor, translator, heritage consultant, and collector of early photographs. He is the author of several books, including The Eastern Townships: In Town and Village (2006) and The Eastern Townships:

On Lake and River (2008). He lives - not far from the Vermont border - in Stanstead, Quebec.

The Vermont-Quebec Border: Life on the Line (128 pages; softcover) is available at bookstores and other retailers across northern Vermont. Signed copies are available directly from the author at: Matthew Farfan, P.O. Box 594, Derby Line, Vermont, 05830. The book sells for $21.99 U.S, plus $5.00 shipping to anywhere in the U.S., for a total of $26.99. In Canada, please mail payment to: Matthew Farfan, 531 Dufferin, Stanstead, Quebec, J0B 3E0.

The total in Canadian funds is: $27.00, plus shipping ($11.00 to Quebec or Ontario; $14.00 to Western Canada; and $15.50 to Atlantic Canada).

The Eastern Townships: On Lake and River $37.00 Author: Matthew Farfan

This long-awaited follow-up to The Eastern Townships: In Town and Village chronicles the history of Quebec’s Eastern Townships through text and archival photography. Nearly 200 photographs are reproduced, providing a rare glimpse of life on and around the lakes, ponds, rivers and waterfalls of the Eastern Townships from about 1860 to 1960. The Eastern Townships: On Lake and River is a visual journey back in time through a fascinating corner of Quebec. The images presented have been carefully researched, and were selected in large part from the author’s extensive personal collection. Chapters include: A Landscape of Water; A Good Place for a Town; Harnessing the River; Bridges; At Work; Enjoying the Water; Camps and Cottages; Hotels, Inns and Boarding Houses; Pleasure Boating; and All Aboard! This stunning bilingual book (208 pages, soft-cover) is a must for anyone interested in the history of the Eastern Townships.

Writes the author in his introduction,

“A country can be shaped as much by its land as by its water. The Eastern Townships are no exception. Each wave of settlement that has influenced the history of the region […] depended upon – and reaped the rewards of – the region’s waterways. Over the last century, the Townships have been the focus of a different kind of invasion: vacationers drawn to the region’s lakes, and cottagers willing to pay an ever increasing premium for lakefront property. At a time when rising demand for lakeside property and environmental threats such as blue algae have brought the region’s waterways to the forefront of our consciousness as never before, it is hoped that this volume will convey something of the part that these diverse bodies of water have played, and continue to play, in the evolution of the Eastern Townships.”

With Heart and Hands and Voices $36.00 Author: Phyllis Hamilton

Over many years, as I travelled the beautiful Eastern Townships of Quebec, I was saddened by the sight of so many picturesque historic churches which were closed or about to close. I wondered whether memory  of the people who built them and the parishioners who faithfully cared for them over many generationswould be lost to posterity. I felt strongly that there was a need to document the histories of these churches and congregations so their story might be preserved for future generations to appreciate. Some of the congregations and their church buildings no longer exist, but many have left behind a wealth of history, and this, I hope will prove interesting to the reader. Phyllis Hamilton

Days to Remember; One-room Schoolhouses in the Eastern Townships of Quebec $16.00 Author: Various

This book is the culmination of an oral history project that the club began in the mid 1990’s. Members of the CFUW Sherbrooke & District set off on a mission to record the memories of one-room schoolteachers from various parts of the Eastern Townships. They interviewed several students and one inspector; approximately sixty oral histories were recorded. Important memorabilia such as teachers’ contracts, report cards and photographs have also been included

During the first few decades of the 1900’s, one-room schoolhouses dotted the rural landscape of the Eastern Townships. Functional in style and constructed of local materials, such as wood, fieldstone, or brick, schoolhouses sprang up wherever pockets of school-aged children lived. It was not unusual to come across a school building every three or four miles because most teachers and students were expected to walk to school.

Most of the teachers in these one-room schools were young women in their late teens or early twenties. Many had attended Macdonald College, but some had stepped directly from high school into the role of teacher. Nevertheless, they assumed sole responsibility for educating all children, from grade one to grade seven within their schoolhouse. Often other duties such as cleaning the schoolhouse, organizing events, and stoking the wood-stove were also required of them.

This was an interesting period in Townships’ social and educational history and Days to Remember; One-room Schoolhouses in the Eastern Townships of Quebec offers a unique window into that world. This 178-page book is filled with personal recollections from teachers and students, touching and amusing anecdotes, many evocative old photographs, and reproductions of rare memorabilia.
With the publication of a permanent keepsake, there will be a lasting tribute to the courageous and resourceful women who taught in our one-room schoolhouses. The experiences and memories recorded are fascinating and we are pleased as a CFUW group to be preserving and celebrating this important piece of educational and local history.

Archibald $10.00 Author: Winona Lawrence Matthews

THE BIRTH OF ARCHIBALD

In a tattered old box full of crumpled-up paper
Hidden away for many a year
Sketchy notes on a man of distinction
Suddenly to my sight did appear.

Archibald Bell was the character's name.
Dreams and inventions were his claim to fame.

I tried to ignore him, but try as I might
He took over my mind by day and by night.
My high-sounding poetry turned into verse.
My writing style suffered and soon became worse.

But Archibald Bell would have his own say
And so I present him to amuse you today.

                                      Here's Archibald.

My Name is Amos $15.00 Author: Amos Joannides

Amos first fell in love at the age of eight, and the world has been celebrating since. Pictured on the cover with his first love, legs spread and dangling off an old country chair, torn jeans a testament to his wild country ways, this young man from the boondocks of Quebec, Canada has never turned back. The wild embrace of Amos and Guitar almost twenty years on inspired a love affair that made his fingers dance madly and his voice flirt dangerously with the gritty and the sexy.

In travels from Europe to Thailand, and endless Greyhounds throughout the United States, he came to understand that music is a master means of communication, one that blasts through doctrine and convention and unites performer and audience in mutual embrace. He saw Thai children groove to his strumming and North Carolinians plough fields to his spontaneous ditties. In time, Amos stumbled upon the healing qualities of music and vibration. The root for the word 'health' in Arabic and Hebrew, S-l-m/Sh-l-m, is also the word for peace, wholeness and integrity. Music has come to symbolize all of these things for Amos. This might be what draws his fans so close.

Heading South $20.00 Author: Jim Robinson

Jim Robinson's  first CD, Heading South, (2003)is a spirited blend of folk and country songs rooted in the musical and story telling traditions of rural life in Quebec's Eastern Townships where Jim grew up, singing and playing guitar in a local dance band with his dad, performing in schools, community halls and barn dances as well as on local radio and television shows.

Fans of the 70's & 80's Montreal-based road bands J.W. FISH and THE ROBINSON FOWLER BAND will remember Jim—band leader, vocalist, guitar and bass player—along with band mates Susan Fowler, Rich Hammond, Bill Davis and Ed Kaye, from their performances in clubs and hotels in the greater Montreal area, Ontario, the Maritimes and northern Vermont. It was during this time he started writing and performing some of his own material, which won recognition from the American Song Festival and a first television appearance on the national CBC series, "Who's New."

All three of Jim Robinson's Cd's are listed with us and if you would like to buy two or more there is a special price of $15.00 each.

Boppin' 15 $15.00 Author: Mike Goudreau & the Boppin Blues Band

the grass ain't greener $15.00 Author: Mike Goudreau Band
Despite all the accolades and notoriety within Quebec (and to some extent the Maritimes) Mike Goudreau remains largely unknown in the rest of Canada. Hopefully the new CD “The Grass Ain’t Greener” (2006) will change that. On it Mike has moved away from the big band with horns style that characterized the Boppin’ Blues Band – thus the name change to The Mike Goudreau Band – and has stripped down to guitar, drums, bass, keyboards and some great wailing harp from Harmonica Zeke. You still get a great mix of rockin’, swingin’, up tempo, Chicago blues with a nice remake of Mike’s “Give It To The Lord” gospel tune included. 8 of the 12 songs are originals.

Songs I Learned from Trees $20.00 Author: Trisha Pope

Out of the breath comes a rythym. And out of the rythym comes a sound. And out of the sound comes two sounds and then a chain of sounds. This is a song.

It starts with the breath and the breath is linked to the cycles of the moon. Without the moon, there is no beginning or end, like the breath. Apulling in and letting out. And this is how we contract, expand, why we hold hands and then let them go. This is the circle within each we are held. Our hands, our eyes, our hearts, our voices.

Everything sings. And the song takes us back to what we are longing for.

These are the songs I learned from trees.

Giving Shelter is a DVD that runs 52 minutes and features numerous Townshippers and Townships locations. Various styles of historic barns are shown in the documentary, including a Dutch barn in St. Armand, seen in the photo above. The DVD also includes a short film that showcases a modern timber-framed barn being raised in Hatley in the fall of 2008.

In a review of Giving Shelter in the June 2009 issue of the Townships Sun, Brenda Hartwell writes: "Giving Shelter breathes life into the interconnectedness of people and animals and shelter. It contains fascinating footage of people working with hand tools in the traditional manner of bygone days. It deftly preserves a way of life that is nearly extinct and offers a historical record of buildings, tools, and agricultural methods. It is also replete with individual stories and personal accounts....

"It will please anyone who has ever spent time on a family farm, anyone interested in rural history, anyone with romantic notions of homesteading. And it will certainly mesmerize all hand tool aficionados."

There is also a registration fee of $10 per title for each exhibitor who is a member of Townshippers’ Association (up to a maximum of $30 for the year). Example: the fee for 1 title (any number of copies) is $10; the fee for 3 titles is $30; the fee for 6 titles is $30.

The registration fee for one work is $25 for non-members under 65 years and $20 for non-members aged 65+. (Membership is included in this fee.) The second and third titles are $10 each and there is no charge for additional titles.

The annual fees remain the same, no matter how many of the exhibits you participate in. Each participant decides how many copies of each work to submit.

Exhibitors are responsible for delivering their books and music to both Townshippers’ offices in Sherbrooke (100 - 257 Queen Street) and/or Knowlton (3-584 Knowlton Road).

Materials are placed on exhibit at both Townshippers' offices for one year - from the first of April to the end of March and at special events.

For special events during the year, your materials must be delivered in advance to the Sherbrooke office with a completed registration form and cheque in advance.

Participants are also responsible for picking up their unsold books, cassettes or CDs before year-end (March 31). If you register for another year, you may leave your unsold materials at our offices. If you do not choose to re-register and have not picked up your items by May 15th, Townshippers' Association reserves the right to dispose of or donate the items at our discretion.

At least two major exhibitions/receptions will be organized in the fall, with readings and music, permitting the public to meet participating authors and musicians. At each reception, one or more of the Community & Culture Committee members will be present. However, as a registered participant, you are warmly invited to attend and take part in as many of the events as you would like. It is our experience that authors and musicians who are available to meet the public (and, if applicable, sign copies of their works) enjoy brisker sales.
