January 13, 2010

Townshippers’ Association invites you to a community health education session, aimed at people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers, volunteers and family members. It is planned for Wednesday, January 20, and will be offered in three different locations.
This 45-minute interactive videoconference is designed to increase people’s awareness and understanding about the disease. Speaker Lucie Lachance, clinical nurse specialist in the McGill University Health Center’s Movement Disorder Clinic, will explain what Parkinson’s Disease is, how it is diagnosed and treated, and what to do following diagnosis. Issues such as communicating with health care workers, asking the right questions, and managing symptoms will be explored.
The Movement Disorder Clinic is an outpatient clinic at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Montreal General Hospital that deals with Huntington’s Disease, Tourette’s Syndrome, Distonia, tics and Parkinson’s. Ms. Lachance is presently on the Board of Directors of the Parkinson Society of Canada and chair of the support services committee. A Sherbrooke University graduate, Ms. Lachance is a popular speaker with 10 years’ experience in this field.
In addition, a representative from the Parkinson Society of Quebec will be present to answer your questions about available resources.
WHO, WHAT, WHY?
In collaboration with the McGill University Health Center and regional organizations such as Townshippers’, the Community Health & Social Services Network (CHSSN) organizes the Community Health Education Program (CHEP), offering distance health and social information in English in eight Quebec communities via videoconferencing, telephone conferencing, DVDs, community radio and other activities. The aim is to raise awareness and provide information to individuals and their communities. Health professionals, caregivers and volunteers in education, health and social services are encouraged to come learn alongside community members. Dynamic, interactive experts in their respective fields, CHEP presenters have a variety of health and social backgrounds: nursing, counselling, psychology, education and community medicine. Guest speakers complement the presenters.
The CHEP promotes existing resources, linking with organizations whose mission it is to provide health and social information, tools and support to the public – in English.
