TOWNSHIPS EXPRESSIONS, TWO LAUNCHES AND A COFFEE MORNING

June 16, 2010

Townships Expressions has a generous collection of books, music and films that celebrate this distinctive area of the world we call the Eastern Townships. Here is a sampling of what is new for this year:

We have two new documentary videos by Louise Abbot: “Giving Shelter” and “Crossing space and time: A history of Farm Fencing”. The two films serve as companions to "The Heart of the Farm", the bestselling book that Abbot and her husband, Niels Jensen, published in 2008. “Giving Shelter: Historic Barns of the Eastern Townships” traces the evolution of historical barn architecture in the region and features numerous Townshippers and Townships locations. “Crisscrossing Space and Time: A History of Farm Fencing” explores the evolution of farm fencing in the Eastern Townships from the “snake fences” and stone walls of settlers in the nineteenth century to the barbed-wire, woven-wire, and electric fences in use today. Both films feature original music by talented Townships musician David Vachon.

The newest arrival to Expressions is “Danville, Québec, 150 years: Rediscover the heritage/ 150 ans: Un héritage à redécouvrir.” Danville is hosting Townshippers’ Day this year and what better way to start celebrating both T-Day and Danville’s 150th anniversary than by picking up a copy of this definitive guide. Learn the history of this unique village through vintage photos and illustrations.

A delightful, illustrated book for young readers “Charlie: The Adventures of Barnie, the owl” follows the adventures of Barnie a great horned owl and his friend Woodstock, the cat as they come to the support of a new neighbour. Part of a popular “Barnie the owl” series by Eastern Townships author Klaus Bremer and illustrated by Marie-André Leblond, these stories are inspired from the author’s surroundings and real animals he has encountered.

For folk music lovers, Townships Expressions offers two new recordings: “Matthew McCully and the matter of principle” and "Gail Klinck and Keith Whittall, …at the Café Rouge.” While inquiring about these two new works, browse through our library of local Townships’ musicians-we have an impressive collection!

Long-time Townships’ humorist and Taproot contributor, Ross Murray will be launching his first book, “You’re Not Going to Eat That, Are You?” this week. Murray, former editor/publisher of the Stanstead Journal and currently a weekly columnist with the Record and Log Cabin Chronicles, offers his unique view of the world in this delightful collection of his columns. Townships’ Expressions will have copies for sale at the Sherbrooke office. Another launch taking place this week is the unveiling of a new Elder Abuse Awareness website. Billed as the “first of its kind in Quebec”, the site, www.stop-abus-aines.ca, brings together a multitude of resources and tools for learning about and recognizing the signs of elder abuse in the Estrie region all in one place.
