TOWNSHIPS P.I. CONTEST: WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Sherbrooke June 1, 2010

Just announced: the first and second prize winners in Townshippers' Association's PI Contest for students in Grades 5 and 6.

The first prize for a story with color illustrations was awarded to Emily Sylvester for her story, "The cat that let the note out of the bag." The runner up for the color category was Emma Murrin for her entry, "The serpent of Lake Memphremagog." The winning story with black and white illustrations was by Olivia Page for "The Megantic Outlaw’s Ghost," while the runner up in the same category was Julia Canzani for her futuristic work, "Journey through time." All entries to the Townships P.I. Contest will be on display at a special reception this Friday, June 4, at 5 p.m. at Studio Georgeville, 20 Carré Copp in Georgeville, just prior to Townshippers' Association's AGM.

The Townships P.I. contest invited students to investigate a story about something that happened here, in the past, and write an illustrated short story about it. The entries received covered a vast range of themes from the human, “Famous (and infamous) Townshippers”, to subterranean, “The monster of Lake Memphremagog,” to celestial, “Journeys through time and space“, with a healthy mix of mystery and legends throughout. The judges were very impressed not only by the quantity but by the high quality of the works submitted. They said they found it difficult to name winners from among this highly creative group of young writers and illustrators.

Winners of the contest will receive a $100 gift certificate, a bound copy of their story and publication of their story in the Fall/Winter edition of Townshippers’ newsletter. The runners-up get a $50 gift certificate and publication of their story in the newsletter.

The Public is invited to view all the entries from the Townships P.I. Contest this Friday at 5 p.m. All entries from the Make Way for YOUth project’s Picture My Region Contest will also be on display. Everyone is welcome to come help support the creative efforts of all our young Townships artists and writers.

Admission to the arts reception and the Annual General Meeting is free. There are still a few seats available for this year’s awards dinner, where three Outstanding Townshippers and three Young Townships Leaders will receive awards.
